  2. Look up and read references on virtualization; virtual machines, virtual servers, virtual hosts, etc.  Be prepared to to make a brief report in class and participate in a discussion of this.

Assignment #4, given 3/4/10, due 3/11/10

If you did not do so in class, you will need to transfer an ISO image of the DVD to some convenient location on your computer.  It seems that virtual box does not properly recognize the DVD player to download directly from the DVD.  You can do this using the Roxio CD burning program.  Choose the copy option and then you will see an option to create an image on your hard drive.  Choose that option and then save the image to some location where you can find it easily later on.  Important Note: when saving the image do not accept the default image type; use the pull-down menu to specify an ISO image.

Once you have the image, start up the Virtual Machine we created last week.  It should fail and say "Fatal."  Before restarting it, click on DEVICES at the top of the virtual box.  then on CD/DVD Devices.  and then on "More CD/DVD images."  click on the add button and navigate to wherever you stored the IOS image.  select that  -- it should show in the devices tab with a check mark next to it.  Then restart the virtual machine.  Win 2008 should start to install.
  1. Finish the intallation of Windows server 2008 in a virtual machine if you did not do so in class.
  2. Look up on the web how to set up Windows 2008 as a web server.  (microsoft may have some information on this)  Put the information on a flash drive or print it out so you can refer to it in class.

Assignment #5, given 3/11/10, due 3/18/10

Now that we have Server 2008 loaded and the IIS role chosen, look up on the web how to further  set up Windows 2008 as a web server.   Put appropriate information on a flash drive or print it out so you can refer to it in class.   Also copy your complete web page into a folder on your virtual machine.

Assignment #6, given 3/18/10, due 3/25/10

Look up VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol); be prepared to talk about it.

Assignment #7, given 3/25/10, due 4/8/10

  1. Download Ubuntu 9.10 ISO image. (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download)   Download the image to a directory where we can use it as a virtual drive in Virtual Box.
  2. Look up  Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM).  Write up a report to hand in as well as present in class.  The report should report in detail all aspects of DWDM and should be at least 3 pages long.  It will not be graded on length but on its technical content and clarity.   Some points which should be included might include:
  • What it is
  • Why it is important
  • Advantages
  • Disadvantages
  • How many different signals
  • Costs
Note that the items above overlap each other.  Also the list is not complete and you would be expected not to limit your report to only these items
